Chapter 1

Name: Adam J. Medina                                                                                                 Class time: 12pm
KEEP THIS TO 1-3 – PAGES LONG (excluding reference page)

Author: Sara Baase
Date of Publication: 2008
Book: A Gift of Fire
Sections read: Chapter 1 Sec. 1.1 – 1.4

1.       (Knowledge)Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:
a.       The rapid change of pace with technology, how it went from using computers with the weight of a ton to now using computers that we can travel with.
b.       The way communication and its ways of getting in contact with people change such as, now we send e-mails to communicate instead of writing a letter and sending it through the mail.
c.        How architects in the past used drawing skills and calculations to build something such as a bridge and now using computers to draw up blueprints and make measurements.

2.       (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?

Within this chapter, Baase is talking about several things, such as a rapid change in technology, such as the change in communication, and even the change from using people to using robotics/artificial intelligence, and using the proper ethics.

3.       (Application)Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – be specific and explain?

Baase reminds me of when I was growing up there were only house phones and one type of cellular phone, and beepers were also big, but now since technology is always changing and it is always improving, cellular phones are smaller, and beepers are not even being used.

4.       (Analysis)Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading? Try to connect what you have by reading this article and how it applies to the stages in Bloom's taxonomy in 2 full sentences.

When reading about what Baase said in the book (A Gift of Fire) about how IBM made the first hard-disk drive which weight a ton to a change like now where computers are now portable, makes me think how things change that didn’t use technology like the way people change to fit their lifestyle around the technology era. People changed and started to lose less on value for what they need and replaced it with wants.  A solution would probably make people to give up the technology and see how they would react, but a more reasonable way would be to have people just learn and be help to realize that everything shouldn’t be in technologies hand and learn to handle and do things them self and place needs in front of wants.

5.       (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS)?  What new conclusions can you draw about this (or other topics) after reading this material?

I agree with what Baase is saying because I personally seen the change in technology.  In the article that I read by Abrahams she explains how beepers just disappeared and tells people to just move on to cellular phones. (http://www.thefastertimes.com/technovice/2010/03/11/what-ever-happened-to-beepers/)

6.       (Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Evaluate why you are viewing the topic in this manner based on your experiences. What ethical evaluations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics) or decisions were made/can be assumed from this chapter?  What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter?

This topic of change in technology is very important and relevant today in society because without the technology we use, we would probably suffer as a society, for example without certain medical technology such as MRI’s, Catscans, and X-Rays, then we would understand such things as tumors or even know if there is a broken bone. After reading this chapter, an idea came to mind, that people in general take technology for granted and it is up to the people to make ethical decisions. The people decided to make the decision of moving forward with technology and Baase makes it clear that people do this to stay up to date with the world moving forward.
